清川あさみ個展「TOKYO MONSTER, reloaded」 Asami Kiyokawa’s New solo exhibition “TOKYO MONSTER, reloaded”

2021

Asami Kiyokawa presents TOKYO MONSTER, reloaded, a solo exhibition featuring mainly new works at the GINZA ATRIUM event space inside Ginza TSUTAYA BOOKS.
In this exhibition, Kiyokawa unveils new works in the TOKYO MONSTER (2020-) series. This is a sequel to her TOKYO MONSTER series, in which she adopted street snaps from fashion magazines of the 1990s as motifs, embellishing them to express the complexes and vanities of people on the streets of Tokyo and to reveal the monsters.
In the TOKYO MONSTER (2020-) series, she uses her distinctive embroidery techniques to express our times and people wandering in search of a future in the midst of the tremendous social changes of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to two-dimensional artwork, the exhibition includes a variety of the artist’s series and projects, such as TOKYO MONSTER COVERS, which has embroidery worked directly into the book in a similar manner to her earlier book, Our Story. She also presents Nishijin brocades, block prints, and long-sleeve T-shirts produced in collaboration with apparel brand WIND AND SEA.
All in all, the show is an encounter with Kiyokawa’s snapshot of Tokyo in the present progressive.
