心のなかに潜む願望や虚栄心の表れを「モンスター」になぞらえて表現する「TOKYOMONSTERシリーズ」。ファッションを通じて滲み出る被写体の来歴や時代の空気を読み取り、デフォルメすることで、新しい自分を手に入れようと葛藤する人々の様を描く。作品はSNSや雑誌の誌面からピックアップした東京・パリ・ニューヨーク・ロンドンそれぞれの都市のストリートスナップと、作家本人が撮影した写真を元に制作される。写真に刺繍を重ねることで被写体のイメージを変容させたり、糸の色によってネガポジを反転させるなど、さまざまな視覚効果を取り入れて画面が構成され、無意識の中に垣間見える人々のアイデンティティがあらわされている。刺繍は被写体を異形のものに変えると同時にそれが誰なのかを覆い隠し、私たち誰もがモンスターになりうることを示唆する。

The Tokyo Monster series likens the ambition and vanity lurking in people’s hearts to monsters. Gleaning hints of individual back-stories and the atmosphere of the times from fashion, and then distorting appearances, the series depicts people who are attempting to find new identities. The artworks are based on street snapshots from Tokyo, Paris, New York, and London, obtained from social media and magazines, or taken by the artist herself. Embroidering directly on to the photographs, Kiyokawa transforms the subject, incorporating visual effects into the picture, such as inverting thread colors to produce color-negatives. The results bring out the identities of the individual subjects that can be glimpsed on an unconscious level. By changing each individual into an unusual form and concealing who he or she is, the embroidery alludes to the potential for anyone to become a monster.
