清川あさみ Asami Kiyokawa

1979年、兵庫県・淡路島生まれ。東京を拠点に活動。
服飾を学ぶと共に雑誌の読者モデルをしていた2000年代より”ファッションと自己表現の可能性”をテーマに創作活動を行う。
雑誌やSNSなど、人々が日々関わる情報メディアやシステムが拡張する社会で、個人のアイデンティティを形成する”内面”と”外面”の関係やそこに生じる心理的な矛盾やギャップなどを主題とする。
偶然「糸」が写真の上に重ねて置かれたのを見たことから着想し、モデルとなる人物を撮影して、その写真に直接刺繍するという独自の手法をはじめる。「糸」と写真のほかに、雑誌や本、布やキャンバスなど、ミクストメディアによる多様なビジュアル表現を展開する。
代表作として「美女採集」「Complex」「TOKYO MONSTER」などがあり、人がそれぞれ持つ人生のストーリーや、心の状態と社会状況の関係を作品化してきた。
水戸芸術館（2011年）、金津創作の森美術館（2015年）、東京・表参道ヒルズ（2012年、2018年）にて個展・展覧会を多数開催。
アートディレクターとして広告のビジュアルやグラフィックデザインに携わると共に、空間デザインやCM映像の制作も行う。
また絵本作家としての活動も続けており、作家・谷川俊太郎氏と 『かみさまはいるいない?』を共作。児童書の世界大会の日本代表にも選ばれている。
2020年より淡路島の地方創生事業に南あわじ市地域魅力プロデューサーとして関わる。
2022年4月より、大阪芸術大学の客員教授に就任。
Born in 1979 on Awaji Island, Hyogo, Japan. Lives and works in Tokyo.
Kiyokawa has been producing creative works that explore the potential of fashion and self-expression since the 2000s when she studied fashion and also worked as an amateur magazine model/influencer.
Her works focus on the relationship between the inner and outer selves that form each individual’s identity in a society where people have everyday exposure to magazines, social media, and other information media and systems. They explore the contradictions and gaps that emerge between internal and external identity.
Inspired by noticing the effect of threads overlapping with a photograph, she experimented by embroidering directly onto photographs taken using dolls as models. This was the start of a distinctive artistic practice that has since expanded to encompass embroidering onto magazines, books, fabric, and paintings, producing variety of visual mixed-media works.
Representative works include Bijo Saishu, and the Complex and Tokyo Monster series. These and other works are based on expressing the different stories of individual lives, and the relationship between society and state of mind.
Solo exhibitions include Asami Kiyokawa Bijo Saishu at Art Tower Mito, Ibaraki (2011–2012), Adastria Bijo Saishu at Space O in Omotesando Hills, Tokyo (2018), Incarnation at Arario Gallery Shanghai in Shanghai, China (2019), and imma at PHILLIPS Tokyo in Tokyo (2020).
As an art director, in addition to visuals and graphic design for advertising projects, she works on space design and creates videos for commercials. Kiyokawa is also an established writer of children’s books and picture books, including collaborations with Shuntaro Tanigawa on Is there God or not? She was selected to represent Japan at a congress of the International Board on Books for Young People.
Kiyokawa is keenly involved in efforts to revitalize Awaji Island, and in 2020, was appointed as producer of projects enhancing the appeal of the Minamiawaji City area.
